My January 2023 Reading List

The new year is here, and it is time to get my read on! This year will be a great one because I have so many things that I hope to accomplish; it's going to be a ride!

I will track my completed reads here on the blog and on GoodReads. Subscribe to the blog and follow me on GoodReads to keep in touch!

One of my goals for 2023 is to Read 100 Books! So about 9 books a month. Since most of what I read are manga, webcomics, and novellas, this goal is feasible, even with my busy schedule. Well, let's get into it! Here are the 9 books on my to-read list for January of 2023!

01. Rurouni Kenshin 3-in-1 Volumes 1-3 by Nobuhiro Watsuki

When former Shinsengumi captain Saitō Hajime arrives on the steps of Kamiya dojo, he challenges Kenshin to a duel that will force a reawakening of Kenshin’s past. Then, Kenshin leaves for turbulent Kyoto, against the wishes of nearly everyone who knows him as the gentle rurouni. Is Kenshin headed to Kyoto for a duel…or for a death match?

02. Man Child and the Promised Land by Claude Brown

Published during a literary era marked by the ascendance of black writers such as Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Alex Haley, this thinly fictionalized account of Claude Brown’s childhood as a hardened, streetwise criminal trying to survive the toughest streets of Harlem has been heralded as the definitive account of everyday life for the first generation of African Americans raised in the Northern ghettos of the 1940s and 1950s.
When the book was first published in 1965, it was praised for its realistic portrayal of Harlem—the children, young people, hardworking parents; the hustlers, drug dealers, prostitutes, and numbers runners; the police; the violence, sex, and humor.

03. Waiting for Spring Volumes 1-3 by Anashin

Mizuki is a shy girl who's about to enter high school, and vows to open herself up to new friendships. Of course, the four stars of the boys' basketball team weren't exactly the friends she had in mind! Yet, when they drop by the café where she works, the five quickly hit it off. Soon she's been accidentally thrust into the spotlight, targeted by jealous girls. And will she expand her mission to include... love?

04. Mint Chocolate Volumes 1-3 by Mami Orikasa

Despite the almost-kiss incident, the sleeping-on-Nanami-at-lunch incident, and the waking-up-in-the-same-bed incident, Nanami still has no idea if Kyouhei has a thing for her—or not. And it’s driving Nanami crazy! But since they’re alone together for the weekend…this may just be the perfect chance for Nanami to find out how Kyouhei really feels…!

05. Shortcake Cake Volumes 1-3 by Suu Morishita

When Ten moves out of her parents’ home in the mountains to live in a boardinghouse, she finds herself becoming fast friends with her male roommates. But can love and romance be far behind?

Ten has moved into a boardinghouse with other high school students to avoid a long commute through the mountains. Ten accidentally overhears Riku talking to Chiaki about his feelings for her. Ten and Riku try to act as if nothing has changed between them, as Chiaki looks on with mixed feelings.

06. Devils' Line Volumes 1-3 by Ryo Hanada

Tsukasa, a college student, is rescued from an attack by a devil, one of many vampires that can blend in among the human population. Anzai, her savior, is a half-devil who exploits his supernatural gifts as a member of a shadowy police task force that specializes in devil-related crime in Tokyo. As Anzai continues to keep guard over Tsukasa, the two quickly forge a tentative bond—one that Anzai fears will test his iron-clad rule of never drinking human blood…

07. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest Volume 1

The manga adaptation of the bestselling light novel series--with an anime coming in 2019! Seventeen-year-old Hajime Nagumo is your average, everyday otaku. However, his simple life of pulling all-nighters and sleeping in school is suddenly turned upside down when he, along with the rest of his class, is summoned to a fantasy world!

While the rest of his class are blessed with godlike powers and tasked with saving the human race from extinction, Hajime’s job, a Synergist, only has a single transmutation skill. Will he be able to survive in this dangerous world of monsters and demons with only a glorified blacksmith’s level of strength?

08. The Legend of Drizzt Book 13 | Sea of Swords: Legend of Drizzt: Paths of Darkness, Book 3 by R.A. Salvatore

When the mark of the great warhammer Aegis-fang is found branded on the back of a vicious outlaw, Drizzt can no longer merely hope that Wulfgar is safe. The dark elf and his companions set out to find the barbarian once and for all. As they discover pieces of the puzzle their friend's life has become, Drizzt grows only more determined to locate him. As his friends search for him, Wulfgar sails with Captain Deudermont in search of the stolen Aegis-fang, now in the hands of the vile pirate Sheila Kree. But the pirate isn't willing to sit around waiting to be caught. She has other plans. Drizzt, Cattie-brie, Regis, Bruenor, and Wulfgar - the Companions of the Hall - come together for the first time since The Silent Blade in a reunion filled with discovery and adventure.

09. The Black Witch: The Black Witch Chronicles, Book 1 by Laurie Forest

A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining.

So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but while she is the absolute image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren is eager to join her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University and finally embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother's legacy. But she soon realizes that the University, which admits all manner of people—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of all Gardnerians—is an even more treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

Note | Some of the books listed are manga series, and I'm currently counting every 3 books read as one. Thus my books-to-read count is higher than 9 books; however, this is how I will be counting them.
